SMART CANDLE

ZACHT AUTOMAAT: S M A R T C A N D L E

Zacht Automaat (Myself and Michael John McLean) have finished our third album this year. The first side is a collision of opposing ideas and the second side is a telescoping outwards of a single tiny idea... SMART CANDLES are available in stores across the country this weekend only. Visit m y s p a c e for free download and track listings (with retroactive track listings for prior records as well).

Here is the second side of that record, based around a simple E major theme mainly in 6 subdivided by its common multiples. THAT means, is circles and gallops around itself, tied together but constantly struggling to escape, like an old old man walking 30 puppies. There is a particular kind of joy here... the satisfaction in rolling pennies meets the feeling of letting your eyes go out of focus while staring at the leaves of a poplar on a bright summer day. It also has a convoluted bit dedicated to what I imagine Stravinsky sounds like.

This track is a big brother to the tape loop pieces. It is structurally very similar to the sorts of things that happen when you layer up loops at different multiples, except played by human hands instead. McLean can hold it down while utter nonsense flies around him, or while performing the bass guitar equivalent of an actor doing green-screen dialogue with an animated co-star that doesn't exist yet. This is called S T E R L I N G ' S _ O V E R.
